Moscow's allure lies in its diversity, offering something extraordinary for every traveler.

Discover these 10 top things to do in Moscow:

1 Moscow City

Moscow City is the financial district located alongside the Moskva River. This area boasts many skyscrapers, including the Federation Towers and the Evolution Tower. During my stay, I chose the Empire Tower, which houses Nebo 47, a hotel capsule on the 47th floor, offering fantastic city views.

These skyscrapers surround Afimall City, a five-story mall where you can enjoy a coffee at Starbucks or shop for clothes at Zara or Pull & Bear. It was the first place I visited when I arrived in Moscow.

2 Red Square

Red Square, undoubtedly one of Moscow's most unforgettable gems, is an absolute must-visit! It's where you'll encounter iconic landmarks like Saint Basil's Cathedral, an emblem of Russia. Beyond its beauty, Red Square has witnessed countless historical events and continues to host grand celebrations like New Year's Eve and Victory Day.

Whether it's day or night, strolling through this historic square is a delight. So, don't miss out on the chance to explore and create lasting memories at Red Square!

3 Saint Basil's Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow

As previously mentioned, Saint Basil's Cathedral stands as an iconic monument in Moscow, recognized worldwide, much like the beloved Matryoshka dolls.

Constructed from 1555 to 1561 during Ivan the Terrible's reign, it commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. Once the tallest structure in Moscow until Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600, this cathedral captivates with its vibrant array of colors. Legend has it that Ivan the Terrible, fearing a similar design, had the architect killed after its completion, ensuring its unique place in Russian architecture.

Saint Basil's Cathedral stands alone in its design, unrivaled in a millennium of Byzantine tradition, as noted in Dmitry Shvidkovsky's architectural book. To avoid crowds, consider visiting on quieter weekdays like Tuesday or Wednesday; weekends often mean long lines due to their popularity within the Red Square area.

4 Gum

The Gum building borders one of the sides of the Red Square and in front of it, you will find the Kremlin.

Known as the Main Universal Store by its acronym in Russian ГУМ (Главный универсальный магазин). It was designed and built by the reign of Catherine II of Russia who commissioned Giacomo Quarengui, to create a vast trade center along the east side of Red Square.

However, the building was burned in a fire in 1812 and replaced by trading rows designed by Joseph Bove. In turn, the current structure replaced Bove's.

Inside, you'll discover a wide array of stores, including renowned names like Gucci, Zara, and Sony. Besides these luxury boutiques, there are convenient supermarkets, and delightful spots to indulge in the exquisite flavors of Russian chocolate, a true treat for the senses.

5. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye Park, inaugurated in 2017 on the site formerly occupied by the Rossiya Hotel, is a remarkable addition to Moscow's attractions. It has swiftly become a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike. This picturesque park offers an array of captivating features, including the iconic Floating Bridge and a stunning Concert Hall.

One of its unique aspects is the division of gardens by various flora zones, allowing visitors to experience the diverse ecosystems found throughout Russia. The park harmoniously complements the cityscape and serves as an excellent addition to the Moscow City zone. Whether you're capturing the beauty of its lush trees or using Saint Basil's Cathedral as a backdrop for your photographs, Zaryadye Park promises a memorable visit.

6. Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin, often likened to the White House in the US, stands as one of Russia's most renowned fortresses. This historic complex has been a symbol of strength and power for centuries. It not only houses treasures like the Tsar Cannon and Tsar Bell but also serves as the official residence of the Russian President.

Initially known as the "grad of Moscow" in the early 14th century, it later adopted the term "kremlin." Inside, you'll find an array of attractions, including the striking Ivan the Great Bell Tower and many more. While many sites within the Kremlin are off-limits for photography, the rich history and architectural beauty make it a captivating destination for history buffs and travelers alike.

While strolling along the Floating Bridge at Zaryadye Park, your gaze will inevitably be drawn to a monumental masterpiece—the Peter the Great Statue. This awe-inspiring tribute soars to a remarkable height of 98 meters, honoring Tsar Peter the Great, a visionary leader who ushered Russia into an era of profound modernization.

Strategically positioned at the western confluence of the Moskva River and the Vodootvodny Canal, in the heart of Moscow, this statue commands attention. Erected in 1997, it proudly claims the title of the world's 8th tallest statue, a testament to the enduring legacy of its subject.

Peter the Great History

Peter the Great's history is one of transformative leadership. His reign witnessed the modernization of the Russian Navy and the establishment of a grand palace in Saint Petersburg, influenced by the splendor of the Palace of Versailles in Paris. This forward-thinking tsar founded Saint Petersburg in 1703, which served as Russia's capital from 1713-1728 and 1731-1918. Since 1918, Moscow has held the esteemed title of Russia's capital.

Exploring the statue offers insight into Russia's rich history and connects you with the indomitable spirit of Peter the Great, whose legacy continues to shape the nation. Additionally, if you find yourself in Saint Petersburg, a visit to his opulent palace is a must, offering further appreciation for his enduring impact on Russia's cultural tapestry.

8. Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour holds a unique place in Moscow's history and architecture. Originally built to celebrate Russia's victory over Napoleon, it later suffered demolition during the Soviet era to make way for the Palace of the Soviets. Construction of the palace began in 1937 but was halted due to World War II.

After the war, the Palace of the Soviets project was abandoned, and in 1995, the reconstruction of the cathedral began. This reconstruction aimed to reconcile Russia's past with its present, bringing the Orthodox religion back to a country where it was once suppressed.

Today, the cathedral stands majestically by the Moskva River, offering visitors a chance to ascend to its rooftop for breathtaking panoramic views of Moscow. It's not just a place of worship but a symbol of Russia's enduring spirit and cultural heritage.

9. Moscow Metro

While exploring Moscow's diverse attractions, don't overlook the city's remarkable underground world—the Moscow Metro. This extensive metro system is not just a mode of transportation; it's akin to navigating an underground museum filled with captivating art, history, and culture. With 230 stations, it ranks as the world's third-largest metro network, trailing only behind London and New York.

Conceived initially to bring palatial splendor to the masses, many stations boast stunning architectural designs that capture the essence of their time. However, during the 1960s, a shift towards more simplistic designs emerged, exemplified by stations like VDNKh and Alekseyevskaya. Still, the Moscow Metro's grandeur endures.

New Moscow Eco-Friendly Electric Rive Tram

Update: In 2023, during his visit to the North River Terminal on June 20, Vladimir Putin inaugurated the first regular year-round electric river transport service. This new route, spanning over 6.5 kilometers, connects Kievsky Railway Station to the pier on the Shelepikhinskaya embankment, a district undergoing active development. The riverboat service is poised to accommodate 15,000–16,000 passengers daily. This initiative signifies the ongoing ecological rehabilitation of the Moskva River and contributes to the comprehensive improvement of Moscow's embankments and beach areas, reinvigorating the popularity of the Moscow Golden Ring route.

Exploring Moscow from the Moskva River provides a fresh perspective, allowing you to admire the city's grandeur from a tranquil vantage point, all while immersing yourself in the rich history and modern vibrancy of the Russian capital.
