7 Mistakes to Avoid when Traveling

iTravy - 7 Mistakes to avoid when traveling

Before you embark on your next adventure, make sure you're well-prepared by avoiding these 7 common travel mistakes. Planning is key, from booking your airfare to budgeting for hotel expenses during your stay.

One misstep in your planning process or while on the road can quickly turn your journey into a headache. According to Ashley Rossi, editor at the online travel magazine SmarterTravel, overspending on vacation is a common pitfall. The excuse "I'm on vacation, I'm treating myself" often leads to budgetary woes when not managed correctly.

An unplanned trip can wreak havoc on your finances, putting a damper on the fun you should be having. But fear not, we're here to guide you through these 7 mistakes to ensure your next trip is smooth sailing:

1 Booking a flight at the last minute

One of the first things you have to plan carefully is the flight ticket to the destinations you're going to visit. The more time you invest in planning and booking your flight tickets in advance, the better the chances of securing affordable fares. Planning ahead also allows you to dodge the hassle of waiting for overbooked flights and spending prolonged hours at the airport, ensuring a smoother start to your journey.

2 Not looking for accommodation options

In addition to planning your flights, another crucial aspect of your journey is arranging your accommodation at the destination. Securing comfortable lodging with good value for your money is essential.

Keep in mind that the price per night isn't the sole factor to consider. It's equally important to evaluate the location of the accommodation and the amenities offered by the hotel or hostel.

Based on my personal experience, some key factors to prioritize when traveling include a reliable Wi-Fi connection, and in many cases, breakfast availability, in-room towels, and designated areas for early arrivals before the official check-in time.

The latter is particularly vital since, depending on the accommodation, this service might be complimentary or come with an additional charge. In some instances, it's well worth paying a little extra to rest for a few hours before embarking on your exploration of the destination.

3 Not calling your bank before traveling

It's highly advisable to make a quick call to your bank and provide them with details about your travel plans before you embark on your journey. Doing so ensures that your debit or credit card remains functional at ATMs in the places you'll be visiting, preventing you from running into cash shortages during your trip.

This simple step only takes a few minutes and can make a world of difference, especially if you're visiting multiple destinations and need to specify your travel dates. Moreover, it can spare you from potential hassles in countries where there may be limited financial relations with your home country.

I learned the importance of this firsthand during a layover in Belarus. My home country, El Salvador, lacked financial relations with Belarus, which meant I couldn't use my credit card or debit card there. Thankfully, my bank had advised me to inform them about my travel plans before my previous journey, which saved me from a difficult situation. Don't forget to take this precaution – it's a small effort that can save you from significant inconveniences. Safe travels!

4 Checking your passport too late

Checking you passport before traveling

Traveling with a passport nearing its expiration can lead to unnecessary complications. It's essential to verify your passport's expiration date before your trip to ensure it's accepted at all destinations.

Always familiarize yourself with the passport renewal process in your country and initiate the renewal well in advance of your journey. In some countries, such as the USA, the renewal process can take six to eight weeks, costing $110. In contrast, countries like El Salvador charge $25 for renewal, and you can obtain it at your nearest Migration Office.

Contact your country's Migration Office to gain a thorough understanding of the renewal process specific to your nation. This proactive approach ensures that your travel documents are up-to-date, preventing any travel-related hiccups during your adventure.

5 Not taking advantage of apps and rewards

Booking your next flight through a travel app like Jet Radar or CheapOair, or even directly with your preferred airline, can often lead to fantastic promotions and discounts. It's a smart strategy to keep an eye on these platforms for special offers and deals.

Additionally, being part of a rewards program is another valuable tactic to consider. Not only can you benefit from existing membership rewards, but some programs also offer new member incentives. Take advantage of these opportunities to accumulate miles and save money on your future flights.

6 Not knowing transportation options

Before embarking on your journey, it's essential to research the transportation options available at your destination. This will not only help you navigate efficiently but also save money.

Check the prices of various transportation modes and look for potential discounts. Some cities, like Madrid, offer tourist tickets that provide unlimited travel for the duration of your stay. In contrast, other places, such as Moscow, allow you to purchase the exact number of rides you need.

For added convenience, consider downloading a travel app like Moovit (recommended in our Apps for Traveling section). These apps provide real-time information about local transportation, making it easier to plan your routes and stay within budget. By understanding your transportation options in advance, you'll ensure a smoother and more cost-effective travel experience.

7 Overspending on groceries or gifts when coming back

Always make it a point to locate nearby grocery stores and compare prices while traveling. This small effort can lead to significant savings by the end of your trip.

Consider the example of water bottles: purchasing small, single-use bottles can be more expensive than investing in a larger, reusable container. This simple switch saved me many euros during my travels in Europe.

Furthermore, when it comes to souvenir shopping, it's important to be discerning. While it's tempting to buy gifts for everyone, it can become costly, especially if you're visiting highly touristy areas where prices are inflated. Focus on buying meaningful and thoughtful gifts for a select few instead of purchasing items that may not be appreciated by everyone.

By being mindful of your spending and making savvy shopping choices, you can enjoy your travels without breaking the bank. Happy and budget-conscious travels!
