Panteleymon Cat Bronze Sculpture

The Story of the Bronze Cat Sculpture

Legend has it that a real gray cat named Pantyusha once called the kitchen of a restaurant near Golden Gate Park its home. Pantyusha was a polite and diligent cat, known for personally inspecting the restaurant to ensure everything ran smoothly, often staying until closing time.

This lovable cat met a tragic end in a fire accident. In memory of Pantyusha, some regular patrons of the restaurant donated a statue, initially featuring a little bird next to the cat as a tribute to its favorite pet. However, the bird kept getting broken off several times. Now, the cat appears to be on the hunt for live pigeons. The statue, with its polished tail and ear tips, shines as if made of gold. Visiting Pantyusha the Cat's Statue not only adds a touch of whimsy to your trip but also connects you to Kyiv's history and its people.

Aquarius Lion Statue

Another hidden gem in Kyiv is the Aquarius Lion Statue. You can find it while strolling along Volodymyrskyi Drive, nestled between Mykhailivska Street and Mala Zhytimyrska Street, in Lytovskyi Skver, a public garden.

The Story of the Aquarius Lion

The Aquarius Lion is a scaled-up replica of an ancient Slav jar originally displayed at the archaeological museum in Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyi. These jars, known as "aquaemanalis," were used in ancient Rus for handwashing rituals before shrine visits. Originally designed as a fountain, the lion statue featured water flowing from its mouth into a basin.

In the early 1970s, the statue was relocated to the city center park alongside other copies of famous Ukrainian archaeological monuments. Unfortunately, the fountain hasn't flowed for many years, with the last known restoration in 2012 during the Eurocup, when the municipality transformed it into a flower bed. However, local tradition still endures: kids love to ride on the lion's back and touch its ears, believing it grants wishes.

In Conclusion, While exploring Kyiv's architectural wonders and historical sites, don't forget to seek out these charming animal sculptures. Whether it's the playful Panteleymon Cat or the regal Aquarius Lion, these sculptures add a touch of magic and whimsy to your Kyiv adventure. Embrace the city's culture, connect with its history, and make your wishes upon the lion's back. Kyiv is waiting to enchant you with its unique treasures.
